Link Digital congratulates the University of Manitoba, following the recent federal investment aimed at protecting Lake Winnipeg. This funding, which Environment and Climate Change Canada announced, emphasises the critical need for solutions to protect one of Canada’s most important freshwater ecosystems.
The Canadian Watershed Information Network (CanWIN), a project built by Link Digital, was one of the organisations that received funding from this program. This grant will significantly enhance efforts in managing and sharing environmental and climate data, contributing to the protection and sustainable management of the wider ecosystem.
Advanced data management solutions to support environmental research
At Link Digital, we are dedicated to supporting environmental research and stewardship through advanced data management solutions. Our collaboration with the University of Manitoba, Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources, a key participant in the newly funded projects, reflects our commitment to using open source technologies for environmental preservation.
The University of Manitoba’s work, particularly in projects like CanWIN, is instrumental in providing data-driven insights into the health of Lake Winnipeg.
CanWIN and its data sharing capability
CanWIN serves as a comprehensive platform for managing and sharing watershed data, facilitating collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and the public. This platform is crucial for monitoring and analysing the factors impacting Lake Winnipeg’s ecosystem, thus providing a foundation for informed decision-making. CanWin uses CKAN – the Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network – the world’s leading open source data management system. The standardised use of CKAN across our network partners ensures interoperability and ease of data sharing.
CanWIN’s involvement in the CKAN Community
A key individual in this partnership is Claire Herbert, the Data Manager of CanWIN. Claire has been a very active and influential presence within the CKAN community, as well as within our broader community of Link Digital clients. She has made significant contributions by presenting at a CKAN monthly live session in July 2022 and our public forum. Claire deeply engages in every opportunity to support others in their projects as well as to learn from the achievements of others in the community.
Her active participation and insights have been invaluable in promoting best practices in data management and building collaborative work within the CKAN community. You can view one of Claire’s insightful presentations here. Her work continues to inspire and support data sharing initiatives that are crucial for projects like those aimed at protecting Lake Winnipeg.
More environmental conversation and data management solutions
The recent federal funding announcement aligns with our mission at Link Digital, creating meaningful change with data. By enhancing the accessibility and utility of environmental data, we enable researchers and policymakers to address pressing environmental challenges effectively. Our work with CanWIN, the Pacific Data Hub, and Living Lakes Canada underscores the importance of integrated data solutions in environmental conservation.
Looking Forward
We are committed to continuing our support for these efforts through internal data management solutions and our new Secure Data Exchange feature, both of which use CKAN and other open-source technologies. By partnering with leading institutions like the University of Manitoba, we aim to empower the environmental community with the tools they need to protect and preserve our natural resources.
Let’s collaborate to create a world where research data is accessible to help guide efforts towards a cleaner and more sustainable water ecosystem. Reach out today and tell us how we can work together to build your data portal.
